Editing PBS Pages with Word Press

When you are told to edit your PBS pages using WordPress, there are only four basic things you need to know. How to add or change text, how to add or change pictures, how to add or change videos and how to add or change links.

Editing PBS pages

Adding or changing text is just like typing an email or a document. Just place the cursor where you want to add or change something and start typing. WordPress will give you a tool bar above the paragraph (block) where you are typing to allow you to make the type a Heading, make the type Bold or Italic.

Yoast will also give you options to change the color or background of the text within the block and to change the letter sizes. These options are in the right-hand column. You can also elect to put text into lists by opening the block option box presented on the right of the document with a solid black box with a plus sign in it.

Changing

Changing existing pictures is easy. If you click on the picture the word “replace” appears in the tool bar above the picture. If you click on “replace”. you have the option of selecting a new picture from the Medial Library or to Upload a picture from elsewhere on your computer.

Adding a New Picture

The steps are similar to changing the picture, but you first have to put your cursor where you want to put the new picture, hit enter to bring up the Option Box (it says Add Block) and select Image. You have the same options as when changing the picture. Either select an image from the Media Library or Upload a new one.

Changing the Size of the Picture

The picture size can be changed in two ways. The easiest is to just put your cursor onto the picture and using the circles on the sides sliding your mouse to enlarge or decrease the size. You will also note in the right-hand column if you scroll down that column you can alter the size by changing the pixels and also select Rounded.

Wrapping Text around a Picture

This is done by clicking the picture and going up to the tool bar and selecting the Align option. Putting the picture either on the right or left which will cause the text to wrap. If you Select Center, the picture is placed in the middle and the text will NOT wrap.

All videos must be placed in blocks designated “Custom HTML”. Start the new block and select that Option. It will usually come up on the first display but sometimes you have to hunt through several option boxes to find it. You can type “HTML” in the search bar at the top of the Options Box. When you make this selection, WP will display an open rectangular empty box across your page area.

You then need to carefully copy the HTML code into the box, using copy and paste. Then hit enter. Changing one video for another is just a matter of deleting out the old code in the box and pasting in the new code. Do not attempt to write your own HTML code. The code can be found on an existing video on YouTube or elsewhere by clicking on the three dots and selecting the copy option.

When your page is published, the code will appear as an image on the published page with an arrow on it to allow it to be played. You can see how it will look published by selecting the Preview option in the tool box above the code.

Links on an existing page are shown as blue text which is underlined. To create a link for the first time, highlight the words that you want to act as the Link. – ie Click Here (although we try not to use those words). Click on the Link option in the tool box. It looks like a chain link from a fence. A box opens and you need to enter the URL (the address you want the computer to go to from the link).

Format of the Link URL – https:://2c31.com/christmas-2024 (internal link) Going to another page on this site.. https://velovita.com/AzGram/bran (external link) going to Velovita

Note that the Internal links all have YOUR site ID in them. The external have the external URL, plus your link ID for that website.

When you add or change a link, ALWAYS test them to be sure they are correct. Be sure they go to where you want them to go. ALL EXTERNAL LINKS SHOULD HAVE THE OPEN IN NEW TAB OPTION CHECKED.

So just print off this page and keep it handy to help you until WordPress become natural for you. It really isn’t difficult.
