Keywords and SEO are very important elements of our blogging pages. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. What exactly they are and how they work is somewhat of a mystery to beginners. This page is not meant to be a technical description of the two items. It is, hopefully, going to turn on a light for new people – how they are used.

We are taught to select a “good” keyword and are shown various tools that show the rating or effectiveness of the keyword. But why does it all matter.
What I’d like to do here is to show you how those keywords are used. And also show why the SEO rating is important to us as online marketers.
Keywords and SEO Response Example
By giving Google a more precise “keyword”, the response was narrowed. What we are trying to do with the “keywords” in our pages is to make our page one of just a few pages that are shown by Google. We try to find on Jaaxy, or another keyword provider, a word or phase that a lot of people put in. But we also want is one that does not have a lot of competition. That means that only a few pages will be shown.
You may want to find the name of a new restaurant in town. You can do a search on Google to find it. So you enter the word “restaurants”. That is your “keyword”. Google would search its database and come back probably with thousands of names. All of restaurants around the world, because you were not specific about what restaurants you wanted. If you had put in a state name and then the word “restaurants”, that would have narrowed down the list. But you would still get too many. However, if you put in a city and state as well as the word “restaurants”, you would get only a list of restaurants in your town.

Keywords and SEO Response
Think of what Google brings back when you search. What you see is a list of things that satisfy your search request. What you are seeing is the title (slug) and meta description of pages out on Google. You will not want to look thru a hundred pages to find your information. You will probably only look at the first one or two that are presented. We want OUR page to be #1 or #2 in a search or at least in the top ten. So we look for optimum results from our search words. We want Keywords that give us SEO or search engine optimization.
Disclaimer
If this seems like an over-simplification, it is meant to be. Just the beginning of why we use keywords and what they do. If you begin researching these topics, you will find many sites offering assistance and explanation. It goes on forever.
You can test it yourself by putting in the keyword in a Google search to see if your page comes up. If it does, celebrate. If it doesn’t it could be way too broad, as is the keyword for this page. But take a look at the URL’s of the pages that do come up.
You can notice the PBS URL quickly, so you might be competing with Rory, Nile, Stacey, or someone else here. This is not totally bad, but there might be a better choice. But don’t waste time initially with this, because it is always best to get all your pages done and get Google AdSense and do your own classified ads. Get the best one you can and move on.
