The MLB Baseball Season 2020 may eventually start next week – July 26th – but will it??? The outbreak of Covid-19 has sidelined this baseball season The normal April start of the baseball season came and went without much fanfare. Now they are going to try again, but will it and/or should it???
The Blue Jays – MLB Baseball Season 2020
I just saw a breaking news flash. Toronto, Canada has denied the Blue Jays the right to hold MLB baseball games in their stadium there. The reason is somewhat obvious. Firstly, the Canadian/USA border is closed. Holding MLB games in Toronto means a team of US players would have to cross the border. That’s 35 players plus managers, couches, and trainers crossing the border. Toronto is now saying that this is not going to happen.
The original plan had a quarantine clause attached to it. It confined the opposing time to either the hotel or the ballpark. And to be under quarantine the whole time they are in Canada. Toronto is now deciding that the risk is not worth it. Without a stadium full of fans and no revenue for ballpark food vendors maybe it is too big a risk. Canadian fans seem to agree.
Even Travel Within the US
But can we really blame them? Even with games being played within the US itself, teams must travel. I am a Diamondback fan. Our opening games are scheduled for San Diego and San Francisco where the virus is high. Even with the teams taking strict precautions, is the game worth the chance the team takes in exposing the players? Even with strict quarantines, the players will still be in contact with hotel personnel transportation personnel, and broadcast personnel.
I certainly would enjoy watching the games on TV. I’ve watched the recent golf matches on television. But the golf ‘teams’ are much smaller and more easily kept at a social distance. I know that life always faces danger. I’m not totally convinced that MLB Baseball and NL football games are that necessary.
Should the 2020 MLB Baseball Season Begin??
Conversely, I’m sure that the players are anxious to play again. They are anxious to maintain their physical toning and skills. But is it worth the chance? Will the cautionary rules keep them safe from the virus? Or would they be exposed anyway?
I am not wise enough to know the answer to these questions. But I know that my pleasure of watching a game on TV is certainly not worth a young player’s life.
Here we are om 2025. Will this happen again with Trump’s tariffs on Canada? It’s too early yet to know, but I am watching.
