My singing dog. We have two new dogs, one is a singer. He really surprised us one night when we watched Jeopardy. In that segment of the show toward the end, when the contestants are given a minute to write down their responses to the final question, a tune is played. And he began to sing. Not just a howl, but right in beat with the music, right up to the last three notes at the end.
It is a song written by the originator of Jeopardy, Merv Griffin. He wrote the song as a lullaby for his son, and it has become the theme song for the show. There must be something in the tone of the song that he hears, because without fail, every time we have the show on, right on cue, Chandler starts his performance.

This Special Singing Dog
Chandler, the singer, is the oldest of two German Shepherd-mix dogs we adopted from a local shelter. He was three years old. His companion when he was captured was a female who was a year younger. Her name is Monica. We don’t know if they are related, but they look so much alike, I have to rely on their collars sometimes to tell which is which. They were named in the shelters somewhere that they passed through. They had been in captivity for about nine months and the shelter was trying to keep them together.
We were only really looking for just one dog to fill an empty hole in our hearts and home after losing another one. However, when we saw the two together, we knew we couldn’t separate them. Chandler was a very protective and tolerant “older brother” to Monica, who was just entering her “terrible twos”.
It was surprising how quickly they bonded with us and have become great family dogs. Chandler still protects Monnie, but gradually Monnie has become more independent. We separate them at night and at first that was difficult, but it has now become routine. Monnie goes with me now, willingly. as long as she knows she has four biscuits waiting for her. And she can count!! Won’t go to sleep until she has gotten all four of them. But she is also getting a little protective of me. She hates for Chandler to give me a good night kiss.
I’ve had dogs all of my life. All different breeds and sizes, from a cocker-mix as a child, to a Labrador and an Australian Shepherd. These two German Shepherd-mix dogs are a mix of their own. They have totally different personalities from any of my other dogs. These two are constantly interacting with us. They are well-behaved, but very curious and alert to everything around them. It has been a very interesting and exciting time with them.
Are German Shepherds dangerous?
I had always believed that German Shepherds were a bit dangerous. These two are a couple of oversized lap dogs. Are they typical of the breed, or are these two very special? To me they will always be special, and we will continue to enjoy Chandler’s performance every time Jeopardy is on.
I think they would protect us, if necessary, in a minute, but they are the most gentle beings otherwise. I have never heard a single growl since we have had them. They were caught roaming the street, so they seem to have learned how to beg for food. Even though we vowed not to feed them from the table, I am unable to resist. But they share. Chandler always makes sure Monnie gets equal bites. If you can’t already tell, I love them.
