Nine Eleven – September 11, 2001 – A day that will live on forever in American history. It was the second attack on the United States, with the first one being the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, back in the 1940s. And I remember both of them. I am that old.
If you are old enough to remember 9-11, you will remember all the details. You will remember exactly what you were doing when you heard of it and what you were doing for the hours and days afterward. It was a shocking and dreadful day, with so much death and destruction.
Nine Eleven Bittersweet
Now, twenty years later, Nine-Eleven is still significant. But for me here in Arizona, there is also another happier remembrance of that day also. Because the country didn’t totally standstill on that day. Other scheduled events were still happening.
One of those events was the 7th day of baseball’s World Series for that year. The Arizona Diamondbacks were playing the New York Yankees in New York! It was decided that the game would go on. The two teams were tied 3-3. This was the deciding day. And the Diamondbacks won the game.
So here in Arizona this year, we not only sadly remember the calamity of the planes diving into the World Trade Center, but we also happily remembered the 20th anniversary of the Diamondback’s win. Both were once-in-a-lifetime events. And while I do hope at some future date that the Diamondbacks have another opportunity to play in the World Series, I fervently pray that the Nation will never again see a disaster such as the World Trade Center.
Perhaps this is just a reminder that despite grave adversity, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. We in America are resilient people. Our spirit cannot be quelled. We will always stand united.
