The Greek Nine Muses have inspired artists and writers throughout the ages. As early as when Homer wrote the Illiad and the Odessey, he appealed to the muses for inspiration. And they are now inspiring winemaking which can certainly be considered an art form.
In Greek mythology, there are stories of the nine Muses. The muses are considered inspirational for literature, science, and the arts. And they are an integral part of Greek history and culture.
When I was quite young, I stumbled upon a book on Greek mythology. And the stories of the Greek Gods and Goddesses enchanted me as a young girl. Now once again, the subject has come forefront, but now it is in a very different context. The stories in the mythologies are still interesting and exciting, but now there is added depth to them. Why? Because I have discovered fine wines.
Today, the word “muse” refers to anything which inspires literature, science, and/or the arts. And the making and savoring of fine wine surely can be expanded to fall into the science category. Additionally, many would also include fine wine in the category of an exquisite art form. And a muse is the source of the knowledge for producing something of the finest quality.
Who Were the Nine Muses
The Nine Muses were the daughters of Zeus, the king of gods, and Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory. Each muse is considered lovely, graceful, and alluring. They each possess the gift of a particular artistic talent. Furthermore, the Muses inspire human artists to greater artistic achievements.
The nine muses are:
- Calliope (or Kalliope) who was the eldest. She had the gift of eloquence, which she was able to bestow upon statesmen and royalty.
- Clio (or Kleio) was attributed with discovering history and guitar.
- Euterpe was said to have discovered several musical instruments, courses, and dialectics. She is always shown holding a flute. Her name means “giver of many delights” or “rejoicing well.”
- Thalia was the protector of comedy; she discovered comedy, geometry, architectural science, and agriculture.
- Melpomene was the protector of Tragedy. She invented tragedy, rhetoric speech, and Melody. You often see her holding a tragic mask and sometimes a bat or sword. Her name means “celebrate with song and dance.”
- Terpsichore’s name means “delight in dancing.” Despite her name, however, she is usually shown sitting down and playing the stringed instrument called the lyre.
- Erato was the Muse who was associated with erotic and love poetry. She was also the patron of mime. Her name means “lovely,” or “desirable.”
- Polyhymnia (Polymnia) was usually shown wearing a long cloak and veil and often rests her arm on a pillar. She is often associated with the harvest.
- Urania (Ourania) is seen wearing a cloak covered in stars and looking upward toward the sky. Many observatories around the world bear her name.
- And finally, the ninth, Thalia often carries a mask of comedy along with a bugle and trumpet which would have been used in Greek comedies. Her name means “joyous,” or “flourishing.”
