AMERICAN HISTORY

American History. You may think of American History as something that happened a long time ago and certainly some of it did, but also some of it is more recent. Events that have happened within my lifetime. I have been here thru some amazing times. I am 84, so even though I was very young, I remember President Roosevelt announcing to the world via radio that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. See a recap below and go to my page to read more about my remembrance of that time

A Woman for President

A Woman for President seems to be gone again for 2020. I am watching the news now after Elizabeth Warren resigned her quest for the nomination. She was the last woman on the 2020 Democratic Nominee list. Here is some thoughts on the subject.

Air Force One

While Air Force One isn’t really a historical event, it is of historical significance to me. Because I remember the Presidents doing trips via train before air transportation became “the thing”. Additionally, for a period in my life, I lived and worked in the DC area only a few miles from Andrews Air Force Base. The home base for Air Force One. I even knew some of the Air Force stewards who served on the plane.

Apollo 11 Landing on the Moon

Last night on CNN, I watched a film about Apollo 11 Landing on the Moon. Twenty-four later, I am still in awe of that film and the actual fate of that mission. When it actually happened on July 20, 1969, I was like most people my age, busy with work and life while it was happening. I was aware of it from the previous night’s news. And that evening, I saw the historic image on the TV news, with Walter Cronkite repeating Armstrong’s famous words. “One small step for man; one giant leap for mankind”.

Memories of Our History

Today people seem intent on removing all memories of our history. They are destroying statues, burning buildings, and demonstrating against everything and anything. Alas, don’t they realize that without the memory of the past, there will be nothing to demonstrate against in the future? Without the past, there is only Today and what happens today. More…

Our American English Language

Our American English seems to have more and more Spanish words slip into our American language. Have you noticed it? See some examples here.

Pearl Harbor Remembered

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. At the time it happened, there was no TV news broadcasts. No reporter on the spot with a cameraman to show it to us as it happened or immediately after. It was only months later that I saw some pictures of it in a NewsCast that was shown at the local movie theater before the feature movie. Instead, gathered around in the living room for the nightly news RADIO broadcast, we learned that the President would speak and we learned the early details of the attack. Go here to read more.

Thanks for the Memories

I want to just say “Thanks for the Memories”. When I say that Bob Hope immediately pops into my head because I am THAT old. It was his theme song and over my 84 years, from as long as I remember, I can remember him singing it. But that is not why I am writing this page. Go here to read about my memories of World War II Rationing in light of the hoarding during this crisis of coronavirus.
